How to use Annotate Screenshot
Add a screenshot
Drag it in or click to choose it. If a side is over 6000 px, you are asked to reduce its size first, because very large images are heavy for the browser.
Choose a tool and a color
Arrows and boxes are made by dragging, and numbers and text boxes by clicking where you want to place them. Choose from six colors and adjust the thickness too. For a text box, type the content first and then click where to place it on the image.
Undo if you place something wrong
Both Undo and Redo work. To remove just one mark, right-click it. If you draw something new after undoing, the redo history is cleared.
Save the marked-up image
Click Create marked-up image to make a PNG at the original size. Even if you drew while viewing it small, the saved file has each mark in the same place at the same proportion.
What it’s good for
Only the marks you need for an explanation
Four tools, pointing with an arrow, grouping an area with a box, ordering with numbers and adding a short note with a text box, make most instruction images. Numbers continue automatically each time you click, and if you delete one in the middle, the next number never repeats an existing one. Text has an outline, so it is readable on both light and dark backgrounds.
You draw more comfortably when you can undo
If you place a mark wrongly, you can go back up to 40 steps with Undo, and redo after undoing. Right-click a mark to delete just that one. Coordinates are handled in the original image's pixels, not the screen size, so even if you draw while viewing it small, the mark lands in the same place at the same proportion in the saved file.

When the result isn’t what you expected
Nothing appears when I drag a short distance
Very short drags are ignored so they can be told apart from accidental clicks. Drag a little longer.
The lines look too thin
On large images they get thicker automatically, but increase the thickness if you need more. They can also look thin because you are viewing the image reduced on screen, so check the saved file as well.
The text box won't place
You clicked the image without entering any content. Type the content in the field above first.
I can only add 60 marks
More than that on one image makes it harder for the reader to follow. It is better to split the image into several.
Key terms
- Original-pixel basis
- A way of handling positions in the image's real coordinates, regardless of the size shown on screen.
- Undo steps
- The number of past states you can go back to. Here it is 40 steps.
- Text outline
- A way of putting a line of another color around text so it is readable on any background.
- PNG
- An image format that isn't compressed again. Text and lines don't get blurry.
Annotate Screenshot FAQ
Does it make the covered area unreadable?
No. The marks are drawn fresh on top of the original, so the original pixels stay as they are. For parts you need to hide, such as personal information, use Blur & Pixelate Photo.
How many marks can I add?
Up to 60. When you reach the limit, you are told before you can add more.
What format does it save in?
It saves as a PNG at the original size. It uses a format that isn't compressed again, so text and lines don't get blurry.
Can I move a mark I've placed later?
Not at the moment. Undo it, or right-click the mark to delete it, and then place it again.
Does the image quality drop when I save?
No. It saves as a PNG at the original size, so if the original was a JPG, it actually stays sharper.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. You can draw arrows and boxes by dragging with your finger. On a narrow screen, though, it is more comfortable to work on a device where you can see the image large.
