How to use Text Compare
Paste the original and the revised text
Put the text before the change on the left and the text after the change on the right. The current character and line counts are shown under each box, so you can see right away whether you passed the limit. If you put them in the wrong order, press Swap.
Choose whitespace and case handling, then compare
If lines where only indentation or trailing spaces changed are flagged as changes, the edits that matter get buried. Ignore leading/trailing spaces ignores spaces at the start and end of a line; ignore all whitespace ignores every space inside a line. The options apply only to the comparison, and the screen shows the original text. Instead of the Compare button you can press Ctrl or ⌘ plus Enter; it does not run while you are composing Korean text. Changing the input or options clears the previous result.
Step through the changes
Use the previous and next buttons above the result to move through changes one at a time and see which one you're on by its number. By default only three lines around each change are shown, and when identical lines run on, it tells you how many lines were skipped. Switch to the full-lines view to see every line.
Copy or save the result
Copy result and Save as TXT produce unified format. Original lines start with -, revised lines with +, and unchanged lines with two spaces, so the distinction survives when you paste into email or a messenger.
What it’s good for
Compare an edited document against the original
Text that has been revised many times, like a contract or a notice, is hard to trace back to what changed. Paste the old text on the left and the revised text on the right, and the lines are aligned and shown side by side. Within changed lines, only the characters that actually differ are marked, so even a one-character difference is not missed. By default it shows only three lines around each change, and when identical lines run on, it tells you how many lines were skipped.
Filter out whitespace and letter-case differences
If lines where only the indentation changed are flagged as changes, the edits that matter get buried. Switch whitespace handling to ignore leading and trailing spaces or ignore all whitespace, and such lines count as the same line. For English documents you can turn on treating uppercase and lowercase as the same. These two options apply only to the comparison; the screen still shows the text exactly as you entered it.

| Setting | Counts as the same when | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Whitespace as is | Characters and whitespace are all identical | Code or config files where indentation must be preserved |
| Ignore leading/trailing spaces | Only spaces at the start and end of a line differ | Text whose margins changed when it was moved and pasted |
| Ignore all whitespace | Characters match even if all spaces inside a line differ | Translations or proofread versions with mixed line breaks and spacing |
When the result isn’t what you expected
Character-level marking doesn't appear
If a pair of lines together exceeds 2,000 characters, character-level comparison is skipped and the whole line is shown as changed. A notice appears above the result. Breaking long paragraphs into one sentence per line lets you see fine detail.
It says the input exceeds the limit
Up to 100,000 characters and 5,000 lines per side are compared. The current character and line counts are shown, so you can tell how much to cut. After shortening, the rest of your input stays as it is and is compared again.
Lines seem to shift and look different
Inserting or deleting one line in the middle can make everything below look different. This tool aligns lines before comparing, so it usually finds shifted lines as the same line. If they are still off, the line break positions have actually changed.
Key terms
- Change
- A group of consecutive changed lines. Changes that are apart are each counted as one.
- Unified format

- Line alignment
- Finding identical lines in the two texts and placing them in the same position left and right.
Text Compare FAQ
How long can the text be?
Up to 100,000 characters and 5,000 lines per side. If you go over, the tool shows the current character and line counts, and you can compare again right after shortening the input.
Whole lines are shown as changed
If a pair of lines together exceeds 2,000 characters, character-level marking is skipped and the whole line is shown as changed. A notice appears above the result in that case.
Is the compared text sent to a server?
No. The comparison happens inside this browser and the text you enter is not saved. It disappears when you refresh the page.
Can I compare tables or Word documents?
It compares text only. Formatting and table structure are not handled, so copy just the text out of the document and paste it.
Can I leave one side empty?
Yes. If one side is empty, every line on the other side is shown as added or deleted.
Does a saved result include the original text too?
Unified format includes both original and revised lines. Unchanged lines are saved too, so you can see the full context later.
