How to use Batch Rename Files
Add several files
There is no restriction on type. Drag and drop to stack them in the list, and if the count or size exceeds the limit, you are told which file is the problem.
Decide the order for numbering
Choose which order to count in when adding numbers. For photos, modified time order is natural, and for files that already have numbers, name order is. Name order compares numbers as numbers so photo2 comes before photo10.
Set the rules and check the preview
You can mix numbering, text before and after, and find and replace. The list on the right changes immediately whenever you edit, so check everything by eye before saving. Files that will not change are dimmed, and files with a problem are shown with the reason.
Save as a ZIP
Copies with the new names come down bundled as a ZIP. The original folder stays as it is, so after checking the result, use the copies in place of the originals.
What it’s good for
It shows you everything before renaming
Renaming is hard to undo. So as soon as you change a rule, it shows each file's name before and after side by side, and files that will not change are dimmed. If new names collide, (2), (3) is added after them so one file never overwrites another. If a new name is empty or too long, saving itself is blocked and you are told where the problem is.
Your originals are not touched
For safety, a web browser cannot directly rename files on your computer. So this tool bundles copies with the new names into a ZIP for you to download. The original folder stays as it is, so if you do not like the result, just delete the ZIP. The order used for numbering can be chosen from the order added, name, size, or modified time, and name sorting compares numbers as numbers so 2 comes before 10.

| Order | What it does | Extension |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find and replace | Replaces text inside the name | Not touched |
| 2. Case | Makes the name lowercase or uppercase | Not touched |
| 3. Text before and after | Adds text before and after the name | Text added after goes before the extension |
| 4. Numbering | Adds a number before or after | The extension is attached last |
When the result isn’t what you expected
The file names on my computer did not change
A browser has no permission to rename files on your computer. That is why you get copies as a ZIP. Unzip the downloaded file and use it in place of the originals.
It says the new name is empty
This happens when find and replace erased the entire name. Turn on numbering or add text before or after so a name remains.
It says it could not bundle a ZIP
If the total of the results exceeds 100 MB, it cannot be saved. Please split the files and process them in two rounds.
The numbering order is not what I expected
Check the setting for the order to number in. The default is the order added, so if you added files in several batches, numbers follow the order they were added.
Key terms
- Extension
- The part at the end of a file name, like .jpg, that shows the type. Changing it can make the file fail to open.
- Digits
- How many digits to write the number with. With 3, it is padded with leading zeros like 001.
- Collision handling
- The process of adding a number after a name to tell files apart when new names would be the same.
- ZIP
- A compressed file that bundles several files into one. Unzipping it gives back the original files.
Batch Rename Files FAQ
Are the file names on my computer changed right away?
No. A browser has no such permission. Download the copies with the new names as a ZIP and use them in place of the originals. The originals are not deleted.
Does the extension change too?
By default it is left alone. Find and replace and the case setting apply only to the name without the extension. Turn on the extension option separately only when you want to make extensions lowercase.
How many files can it handle?
Up to 300 files at a time, 100 MB per file, and 500 MB in total. The ZIP result can be saved up to 100 MB, so if it is larger, please process in parts.
Are the originals deleted?
No. This tool only reads the originals and creates new copies.
Can I add a whole folder?
Depending on the browser and device, dragging in a folder may work, but to be safe, please choose and add files. The folder structure is not kept in the ZIP; only the files are.
Do names in other languages such as Korean work?
Yes. Only the characters that cannot be used in file names, \ / : * ? " < > |, are blocked, and everything else is used as it is.
