Lower means smaller files

Compress Images: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- Supported files
- JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP. You can select or drag and drop up to 20 at a time.
- File limits
- 20 MB per file, 100 MB total input, and up to 36 megapixels per image. The total of the results is also capped at 100 MB.
- Size and quality
- Maximum width 1 to 8192 px; JPG, WebP, and AVIF quality 10 to 100% or a target size of 5 to 20,000 KB. For PNG, choose between reducing colors (256 or fewer) and lossless.
- Aspect ratio and transparency
- The aspect ratio is kept and images are never enlarged beyond the original. Transparent areas turn white in JPG.
- Saving results
- Download finished images one by one or all at once as a ZIP. Original files are never overwritten.
- Where it runs
- The conversion of your selected photos runs in this browser. Download your results before closing the page.
How to use Compress Images
Gather your photos and check the list
Add several photos by choosing files or dragging them in. Adding more appends to the existing list. Removing photos you do not need and checking the originals in the preview helps you avoid converting the wrong files.
Pick a format to suit where you will upload
First check the file extensions, width, and file size the destination site allows. Choose JPG or WebP for photos, and PNG or WebP for graphics that must keep a transparent background. This setting applies to the whole list.
Set the maximum width and quality, then convert
Reducing the width reduces the pixel count, and for JPG and WebP you can also adjust quality. While converting, watch each file's completion status. If you stop, it finishes the file it is working on and then halts, and completed results are kept.
Compare sizes per file and save
Compare the original and result sizes to check they meet the submission requirements. Save only the files you need, or collect them in a ZIP. Changing a setting clears the previous results, so you need to convert again with the new settings.
What it’s good for
Shrink many photos at once
Select your photos, set a shared maximum width, quality, and output format, and convert them in one batch. If you need exact width and height, rotation, or flipping, use the photo resize tool instead. You can compare the original and result size of each file, then save only the results you want one by one or collect them into a ZIP. For JPG, WebP, and AVIF you can control quality or a target size (KB); for PNG you can reduce colors to 256 or fewer or tighten lossless compression, which also shrinks screenshots a lot. Files that are already optimized can even get larger after conversion.
Which format is best: JPG, PNG, or WebP?
JPG works for photos that do not need transparency. If you need a transparent background, choose PNG or WebP. Saving as JPG turns transparent areas white. Checking the formats and size limits of the site you will upload to first saves you from converting again.

| Format | Choose it when | Things to check |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Submitting photos that do not need transparency | A transparent background is saved as white. Lowering quality can blur text and edges. |
| PNG | Keeping a transparent background or sharp shapes and text | Reducing colors shrinks screenshots and graphics a lot, but photos may show color banding. Choose lossless if you need the original exactly. |
| AVIF | You want the smallest file at the same quality | Conversion takes longer, and older programs and some sites do not accept AVIF. |
| WebP | The destination site supports WebP and you care about both transparency and size | Check first that the service you will use accepts this format after download. |
When the result isn’t what you expected
The file got bigger after compressing
Results can grow if the photo was already optimized or you converted a JPG to PNG. Check the size-increase notice shown in the result, then reduce the width or change the format and compare again. You do not have to use a result that did not get smaller.
Only a few were added or conversion failed
Check the error next to the file name. Causes can be a damaged file, an unsupported format, or the limits on individual size, pixel count, or total size. Results for good files are kept, so remove the failed ones or process them again in smaller batches.
I need to submit under 100 KB
For JPG, WebP, or AVIF, choose target size and enter 100. It finds the highest quality that fits. If even the lowest quality is over the limit, the result row tells you, so reduce the maximum width and convert again. Open the final image to confirm the text is readable, and double-check the submission site's actual limit.
Key terms
- Pixel size
- The number of dots across and down an image. This is a different measure from file size in KB or MB.
- Quality
- The quality setting used when saving JPG or WebP. Even the same value gives different file sizes for different photos.
- ZIP
- A format for receiving several result files as one bundle. Saving as ZIP does not change the quality of each photo again.
Compress Images FAQ
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
Image conversion runs in this browser. The photos you select are not sent to a conversion server, and the downloaded results are saved on your own device.
Can I hit exactly 100 KB or 1 MB?
For JPG, WebP, and AVIF, enter a target size (KB) instead of quality and the tool finds the highest quality that fits within it. It aims for a size at or below the target rather than exactly that number, and reducing the maximum width as well makes it easier to fit. For PNG, choose between reducing colors and lossless instead of a target size.
Can I compress several images at once?
You can add up to 20 JPG, PNG, or WebP files and convert them in one batch. Each file can be up to 20 MB with a 100 MB total input, and results are saved as individual files or a ZIP. The total of the results is also limited to 100 MB, so if you exceed it, lower the size or quality or convert in smaller batches.
Does it support animated images and HEIC?
Images are never enlarged beyond the original, and animated images such as animated WebP are saved as a single still image. HEIC and PDF conversion are not supported.
Will files be saved if photos in different folders have the same name?
If result file names collide, a distinguishing number is added. Names are also kept distinct inside the ZIP so files do not overwrite each other. Adding a file with the same name, size, and modified time again may be treated as a duplicate.
Do I have to convert everything from the start after stopping?
Completed results are kept and you can continue converting the remaining files. However, if you change the width, quality, or format, the existing results become invalid and everything must be processed again with the new settings.
