Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip Split: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- What to enter
- Three things: distance, fuel economy, and fuel price. Everything else is optional.
- Formula
- Fuel amount is distance divided by fuel economy, and fuel cost is fuel amount multiplied by fuel price.
- Round trip
- Only the distance is doubled. Tolls you enter yourself are not doubled; only the one-way toll fetched from a route is counted twice.
- Find by route
- Pick a start and destination inside South Korea by address search or on the map to get the one-way distance and the passenger-car toll. Addresses and coordinates go to Naver Cloud only at this point.
- Extra costs
- You can add up to 20 tolls and parking fees, each with a name and an amount.
- Splitting the cost
- The rounded total is split down to the single won, so the money collected matches the total exactly.
- What it does not do
- It does not look up fuel prices or live fuel prices. It also does not search by station or shop name or find routes outside South Korea.
- Limits
- Distance up to 100,000 km, fuel economy up to 100 km/L, fuel price up to 100,000 KRW/L, and up to 100 people.
How to use Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip Split
Choose one way or round trip
If you choose Round trip, the distance you enter is counted twice. Just enter the one-way distance your map app gives you.
Enter distance, fuel economy, and fuel price
If you don't know the distance, choose the start and destination under "Find distance by route" and press "Use this distance." The one-way distance goes into the distance field. The average fuel economy on your dashboard is the most accurate. If you're not sure, tap a vehicle type button to fill in a common value, then adjust it. For the fuel price, enter the posted price at the station you will use.
Add tolls
These are charges that apply regardless of distance. If the tolls differ on the way there and back, make separate items and enter only what you actually paid.
Set who will split the cost
With two or more people, each person's share comes out to the single won. Any won that doesn't divide evenly is added one by one starting from the first person.
What it’s good for
Round trip doubles only the distance
If you choose Round trip, the distance you entered is counted twice, and the amount of fuel and the fuel cost are recalculated. However, money that is charged regardless of distance, such as tolls and parking fees, is not doubled. If the tolls differ on the way there and back, add them as separate items and enter only what you actually paid.
You can find the distance and tolls by route
If you don't know the distance, open "Find distance by route" and search for the start and destination by street or lot-number address, or pick them by tapping the map. Naver Directions (real-time fastest route) gives the one-way distance and the passenger-car toll, and they are used in the calculation only when you press "Use this distance." Only routes inside South Korea can be found, and addresses and coordinates are sent to Naver Cloud only when you use this feature. Searching by station or shop name is not supported.
Split payments always match the total
If you round each person's share and multiply by the number of people, the sum can be off from the total by a few won. This tool first fixes the rounded total and then splits it down to the single won, and any won that doesn't divide evenly is added one by one starting from the first person. So adding up the money collected always equals the total.
Worked examples
Seoul to Busan and back
Distance 400 km · round trip · fuel economy 12 km/L · fuel price 1,700 KRW · toll 45,000 KRW · 4 peopleTotal 176,333 KRW
Per person 44,083 KRWWhen only fuel economy changes
Distance 100 km · one way · fuel price 1,700 KRW · compare fuel economy of 10 and 1410 km/L costs 17,000 KRW, 14 km/L costs 12,143 KRWChoosing between one way and round trip
Swipe the table sideways to see the rest.
| Situation | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Going and coming back | Round trip | The distance is doubled, so the fuel cost is doubled too. |
| Giving a ride one way only | One way | You don't share the cost of the return trip. |
| Different routes there and back | One way, twice | Calculating each and adding them is closest to the real cost. |
When the result isn’t what you expected
It differs from what I actually paid for fuel
That is because of fuel economy. The average on the dashboard is based on recent driving, and city and highway driving differ a lot even for the same car. Entering the amount you actually filled divided by the distance you drove gives the closest result.
What about electric vehicles?
Just change the units. Enter km/kWh in place of fuel economy and KRW/kWh in place of the fuel price, and the charging cost comes out the same way. Only the unit labels on the screen remain based on gasoline.
The money collected differs from the total
That doesn't happen with this tool. It rounds the total first and then splits it down to the single won. The re-added sum is shown at the bottom of the screen so you can compare.
Key terms
- Fuel economy
- The distance you can travel on 1 liter of fuel. The unit is km/L.
- Cost per km
- The total cost including tolls, divided by the distance actually driven.
Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip Split FAQ
Does it fetch fuel prices automatically?
No. The route search only finds distance, time, and tolls. Prices differ by gas station and change daily even at the same one, so if we set a price for you, you would end up trusting a wrong amount. Enter the posted price at the station you plan to use.
What if I don't know my fuel economy?
We provide commonly used values by vehicle type that you can tap to fill in. However, real fuel economy varies a lot with driving habits and roads, so entering the average fuel economy from your dashboard is much more accurate.
Does it work for electric vehicles too?
Just change the units. Enter km/kWh in place of fuel economy and KRW/kWh in place of the fuel price, and the charging cost comes out the same way. The unit labels on the screen remain based on gasoline.
Does it fetch fuel prices automatically?
No. They differ by gas station and change daily, so if we set a price for you, you would end up trusting a wrong amount.
Does it tell me the highway toll?
If you use "Find distance by route," the one-way toll from Naver Directions (for a Class 1 passenger car) goes into the "Toll" line, and it is counted twice for a round trip. If your vehicle type, discounts, or return route differ, correct the amount.
Are the values I enter saved?
They are not saved. They disappear when you refresh. Addresses and coordinates are sent to Naver Cloud only when you search for a route; fuel economy, fuel price, and the number of people are not sent anywhere.
