Split the Bill: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- Limits
- Up to 30 people and 100 expenses. Amounts are whole numbers from 1 to 1 billion KRW.
- How to split
- For each expense choose between Split equally and Set amounts, and choose who shares each expense separately.
- Leftover won
- If it does not divide evenly, the few leftover won go to the person who paid. If the payer is not a participant, the first participant gets it.
- Transfer list
- A list that matches those who should receive and those who should send, starting from the largest amounts, so that every balance becomes 0. It does not guarantee the fewest transfers.
- Settlement message
- Enter a settlement name and the account to receive money, and copy it as a message for chat apps such as KakaoTalk. These values are not saved or sent.
- Transfers
- It only calculates and does not actually send money.
How to use Split the Bill
Decide who is in
By default there are Me, Friend 1 and Friend 2. Edit the names and add people with 'Add'. Identical names are told apart with a number added at the end.
Add the expenses one at a time
With 'Add expense', enter an expense name, an amount and the person who paid for each outing, such as the first round and the second round.
Choose who shares and how
For each expense, turn people on or off as sharers. With Split equally the amount per person is shown right away, and with Set amounts you enter an amount per person so the total matches.
Copy the transfer list and settlement message
Check the list of who sends how much to whom, enter the account to receive money, and click 'Copy settlement message' or 'Copy transfers only'.
What it’s good for
Different people for each outing is fine
It is common for everyone to go to the first round and only a few to stay for the second. Add each expense separately and choose its participants, and everything is settled at once. There is no need to calculate each outing separately and add them up. When you remove a person, the expenses they were part of are cleaned up too, so the calculation never goes out of sync.
When a few won are left over
Splitting 10,000 KRW among three people is 3,333 KRW each with 1 KRW left over. This tool is set so that the person who paid keeps the remainder. The rule is always the same, so the same input gives the same result. The total always matches the original amount exactly.
Worked examples
Three people at the first round, two at the second
First round 100,000 KRW - paid by Me - Me, Friend 1, Friend 2
Second round 45,000 KRW - paid by Friend 1 - Friend 1, Friend 2Friend 2 -> Me 55,833 KRW
Friend 1 -> Me 10,833 KRWWhen splitting by set amounts
Dinner 60,000 KRW - paid by Me - set amounts
Me 10,000 KRW - Friend 1 20,000 KRW - Friend 2 30,000 KRWFriend 2 -> Me 30,000 KRW
Friend 1 -> Me 20,000 KRWComparing the ways to split

| Method | Calculation | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Split equally | Amount / participants, leftover won to the payer | Everyone ate and drank about the same |
| Set amounts | The amount you enter for each person | The cost of what each person ordered differs a lot |
| Remove a participant | Excluded from that expense only | Someone did not come to the second round |
When the result isn’t what you expected
'The set amounts are short by X KRW.'
With Set amounts, the sum of the per-person amounts must equal the expense amount. The amount that is missing or over is shown below.
'Choose at least one person to share.'
Every expense must have at least one person turned on as a sharer to be included in the calculation.
I removed a person and an expense disappeared too
Expenses the removed person paid for, or that only they took part in, are removed with them so the calculation does not go out of sync. The names of the removed expenses are shown in a notice.
'Some amounts still do not add up.'
Expenses with errors, such as an amount of 0 KRW or an empty expense name, are left out of the settlement. Check the expenses marked in red.
Key terms
- Going Dutch

Split the Bill FAQ
Can each person pay a different amount?
Choose Set amounts for an expense and you can enter each person's share yourself. If the total does not match the full amount, it tells you how much is missing or extra.
Is money actually transferred?
No. It only calculates and tells you the result. Transfers must be made in each person's own bank app.
Are the names and amounts I enter saved?
They are not sent to a server. Calculation happens only in this browser, and everything disappears when you refresh the page.
Is it okay if the person who paid was not at that outing?
Yes. If you remove the payer from the sharers, the others split it with no share for that person. The leftover won goes to the first participant.
If the amount per person does not divide evenly, who pays more?
With Split equally, the leftover few won are added to the payer's share. So what the others send is the same down to the won.
