How it works and good to know

Standard Roman numerals cover only 1 to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX); there’s no zero, negative or decimal. A letter can repeat at most three times, and only the six subtractive forms IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM are standard. Entered Roman numerals are read, rebuilt in standard notation and compared, which filters out forms such as IIII, IC and VX. From 4,000 up, vinculum (overline, ×1000) notation is shown for reference.

A symbol repeats at most three times (III = 3), and only six subtractive pairs put a smaller value before a larger one: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. Zero, negative numbers and fractions cannot be written in Roman numerals.
