How it works and good to know

Follows South Korea’s official Revised Romanization of Korean (Ministry of Culture notice 2024-27). Names are romanized syllable by syllable without sound changes (Han Boknam), and the given name can be joined, hyphenated or spaced, all of which Korean passports allow. One-syllable surnames default to the spelling most common in a 2007 sample of 63,351 Korean passports (National Institute of Korean Language), and surnames with at least 20 entries show the share of each spelling. Spellings the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists as negative (such as SIN or GANG) and single-vowel given names (KIM A) are flagged. Places and words follow standard pronunciation for assimilation, palatalization and aspiration; tense consonants are not marked. A Korean passport name can only be changed later for reasons set in law. Text is converted in your browser and never sent to a server.

Sound changes inside a name are not written (Han Boknam). Lines with a space use it to find the surname. Korean passports write the given name joined by default, and also allow a hyphen or a space.

Before using it on a passport

A Korean passport name is the Hangul name in the family register romanized syllable by syllable under Korean rules; it is not an English name. Once set, it can only be changed for reasons in the law (a large mismatch with the rules or pronunciation, long use abroad, matching a family member’s surname, a negative meaning, a legal name change and so on). Credit cards, diplomas or TOEIC records do not count.

This tool uses the surname spelling most common in the 2007 passport sample and romanizes the given name from the official table. If you already use a spelling, keep it. Results are for reference.
