Label Maker: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- Input
- One name per line, and adding x3 at the end makes several copies of the same label. Up to 2,000 labels at a time.
- Label sheet layouts
- You can use four layouts that divide A4 (2 columns x 4 rows, 3 columns x 8 rows, 4 columns x 10 rows, 1 column x 3 rows) or dimensions you enter yourself.
- Dimensions
- Label size, margins, and gaps are all taken in millimeters, and if the layout overflows the paper, it is blocked before creating anything.
- Text
- Starts at 14pt, and shrinks automatically if it overflows the cell, but never below 6pt. Characters not in the font are flagged in advance. The font covers English letters, numbers, and Korean only, so Japanese kana and kanji are not included.
- Saving
- Look at the first-page preview and save it as "labels.pdf". Keep the print scale at 100%.
How to use Label Maker
Enter the names
Write them one per line in "Names for the labels". "Now n labels · n pages" shows the number of labels and pages right away.
Choose a label sheet layout
Pick a similar layout in "Label sheet", then measure your label sheet with a ruler and match the number of columns, label width, margins, and so on.
Set the cells to skip and the text
If some cells have already been peeled off, enter that number in "Cells to skip". Also set the font size and "Draw faint cut lines".
Create the PDF and save it
Press "Create PDF" and get it with "Save PDF". Choose actual size (100%) in the print dialog so it lines up with the cut lines.
What it’s good for
Enter the dimensions exactly as the label sheet instructions give them
It takes the number of columns and rows, the width and height of each label, the margins around the edge of the paper, and the gaps between labels, all in millimeters. Just copy the numbers printed on the label sheet packaging or instructions. If the layout overflows the paper, the tool blocks it before creating anything and tells you by how many millimeters it overflows. That's because printing an overflowing layout would waste a whole label sheet.
You can keep using a partly used label sheet
If you peeled off five labels last time, set the cells to skip to five. Those spots on the first sheet are left blank, and printing starts from the sixth cell. Without this feature, you couldn't use the rest of a sheet and would have to take out a new one every time.
Set the print scale to 100 percent when printing
The most common cause of failure is the print settings, not the tool. If you use fit to page or shrink to fit, everything is reduced by a few percent and drifts away from the cut lines toward the bottom. In the print dialog, choose actual size or 100 percent, and even if it feels wasteful, we recommend printing the first sheet on plain paper and holding it against the label sheet.

When the result isn’t what you expected
It says the width or height overflows the paper
Reduce the number of cells, label size, margins, or gaps by the amount shown in "The layout is n mm wider than the paper". Entering the dimensions from the label sheet instructions as they are is usually correct.
I can't enter more cells to skip
You can skip at most one fewer than the number of cells on a sheet. With a 24-cell layout, that is up to 23 cells.
It says some characters aren't in the font
Characters such as Chinese characters (hanja), Japanese kana or kanji, and special symbols can't be included and would print as blanks. Replace them with English letters, numbers, or Korean.
It prints out of line with the cut lines
Turn off "Fit to page" in the print dialog and print at 100% (actual size). First do a test print on plain paper with the faint cut lines drawn, and hold it against the label sheet.
Key terms
- Cut line
- The cutting line already printed on the label sheet. Text should not touch this line.
- Cells to skip
- The number of cells already peeled off. That many cells at the start of the first sheet are left blank.
- pt (point)
- A unit of text size. 1pt is 1/72 inch, about 0.35 mm.
Label Maker FAQ
How do I make several labels with the same name?
Write something like x3 after the name to make that many. If you write Alex Morgan x3, you get three Alex Morgan labels. You can make up to 2,000 labels at a time.
Does a long name overflow the cell?
The font size shrinks automatically to fit the cell. However, it won't go below a readable size, so for a very long name, enlarge the label cell or shorten the name.
Can't I just choose by product number?
The built-in layouts are calculated by dividing A4 and don't claim any specific product number. Even products with the same name sometimes have different dimensions from edition to edition, and if we attached an unverified number, someone who trusted it and printed would waste a whole sheet. Please measure your label sheet with a ruler and enter the numbers.
Is my list of names uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is also created inside this browser.
Are the cut-line guides printed too?
If you turn on "Draw faint cut lines", a faint border is added. Turn it on when you do a test print on plain paper, and you can turn it off when you print on the real label sheet.
Can I mix cells of different sizes on one sheet?
A sheet is made only in layouts where cells of the same size are laid out like a grid. Make labels of different sizes separately.
