    How to use

Everything you enter is processed only in this browser.

    1. 01

Open a Markdown (.md) file or start a blank document

    2. 02

Edit headings, lists, tables and code as they will look

    3. 03

Press Save .md to download it, or save it as Word or HTML

How it works and good to know

The editor is the GenOffice (Apache-2.0) Markdown editor adapted for the browser; about 3 MB is downloaded the first time it opens. .md, .markdown and .txt (UTF-8) files up to 10 MB can be opened. You edit the rendered result instead of Markdown symbols, and saving downloads plain .md text again. Pictures you add are embedded in the document as data URLs, since there is no folder beside the file. Save as Word downloads a docx, and Save HTML downloads a single HTML file with the formatting. AI, PDF and image export, and printing are not included here. Files are handled only in this browser and are never sent to a server; only a few display settings stay in this browser’s storage.

Markdown Editor — Edit .md Files Online guide

Edit Markdown by looking at the result, not the symbols

When you edit a README, notes or a blog draft written in .md, you don’t need to remember symbols like # or **. This editor shows headings, lists, tables and code blocks as they will look, and turns them back into Markdown text when you save. It is a port of the open-source GenOffice (Apache-2.0) Markdown editor for the browser.

    Export to Word or HTML

To send it to someone who doesn’t use Markdown, press Save as Word (docx) or Save HTML. The HTML is a single file with the formatting, so it can be attached to mail or opened directly in a browser.

    Good to know

Pictures you add are embedded in the document as data URLs, because there is no folder beside the .md. Many pictures therefore make the .md file large. If you would rather type the symbols yourself and see the source and result side by side, use Markdown Preview.

Markdown Editor — Edit .md Files Online FAQ

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The document is opened and saved only inside this browser and disappears when you close the page. If there are unsaved changes, the browser asks once more when you leave the page.

    Can it open .txt files?

Yes, UTF-8 .txt files open. Saving downloads them as .md.

    Can large files be opened?

It opens files up to 10MB, which is plenty for a text-only document.
