Mouse Click Test: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- What is checked
- Seven items in all: five buttons (left, wheel, right, back, forward) and two wheel directions (up and down).
- Test area
- It receives signals only inside the marked area. The right-click menu does not open inside the area.
- Click interval
- It measures the time between the last two left clicks in milliseconds. It is not shown if you have clicked only once.
- Double-click threshold
- When the interval is 500 milliseconds or less, it says the interval falls within what counts as a double-click.
- Side buttons
- Back and Forward are detected only on a mouse that has those buttons.
- Leaving the area
- If the cursor leaves the area, the pressed indicator is released.
- Where it runs
- The click record is shown only on this browser's screen and is not saved or sent.
How to use Mouse Click Test
Press the buttons one by one inside the test area
Keep the cursor inside the area with the mouse picture while you press. Try left, wheel and right, in that order. While you hold a button, that part is shown dark, and when you let go, it changes to detected.
Scroll the wheel up and down
You need to scroll with the cursor over the area for the signal to register. Scroll up once and down once, and both items turn to detected. If only one direction is detected, detection in that direction may have weakened.
If there are side buttons, check them too
If your mouse has Back and Forward buttons on the thumb side, press them. If the buttons exist but are not detected, the manufacturer's software may have assigned a different function to them.
Look at the click interval to check for chattering
If the click count goes up by two when you pressed only once, the switch signal is bouncing. In that case, the click interval shows as very short. Repeat it several times to see whether the same symptom keeps appearing.
What it’s good for
When you suspect chattering
If the click count goes up by two when you pressed only once, the switch is worn and its signal is bouncing. Look at whether the interval between the last two clicks keeps showing up as very short. Inside the test area, the right-click menu does not open, so you can check the right button comfortably too.
When the side buttons are not detected
The Back and Forward buttons send a signal only on a mouse that has those buttons. If you have the buttons but they are not detected, the manufacturer's driver may have assigned a different function to them. A touchpad has limited button distinction.
Worked examples
When you have checked everything on an ordinary mouse
Left, wheel and right clicks, and wheel scrolled up and downItems checked 5 / 7When chattering is suspected
Pressed left only once but the count rose to 2Last click interval 20 msHow to read the click interval
Swipe the table sideways to see the rest.
| Interval | Meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50 ms | An interval that is hard for a person to make on purpose | If you pressed only once, suspect chattering. |
| 500 ms or less | An interval that counts as a double-click | This is the normal range. |
| Over 500 ms | Treated as two separate clicks | If double-click does not work, check your operating system settings. |
When the result isn’t what you expected
Scrolling the wheel is not detected
If the cursor is outside the test area, no signal comes in. Put the cursor over the area and scroll again. If there is still no response, it may be a problem with the wheel's sensor.
A menu appears when I press the right button
You pressed outside the test area. Inside the area, the menu is blocked from opening. Try pressing inside the area.
A touchpad cannot tell the buttons apart
A touchpad imitates buttons by the number of fingers, so it may not be separated like a mouse. Check whether a two-finger tap is registered as the right button. For an accurate check, connect a real mouse.

Mouse Click Test FAQ
What is the double-click threshold in milliseconds?
It depends on the operating system settings, but it is usually around 500 ms. This tool says that if the interval between the last two clicks is 500 ms or less, it falls within the interval that counts as a double-click.
I scrolled the wheel but it was not detected.
You need to scroll with the cursor over the test area. Scroll up once and down once, and both items turn to detected.
Is the click record saved?
The click record is only shown on screen and is not saved or sent. Click Clear record or refresh the page and it resets.
Do all seven have to be detected for the mouse to be normal?
No. A mouse without side buttons has five at most. If every button your mouse has is detected, it is normal.
Can I change the double-click speed here?
No. This tool only measures and shows the interval, and the speed setting is adjusted in your operating system's mouse settings.
Can I show the result to someone else?
Click Copy result and the check status of each button, the click count and the last interval are summarized in text. You can paste it as is when you sell a used item or file a repair request.
