Split PDF: complete guide
Walk through the steps and examples, or jump straight to the topic you need.
At a glance
- Supported file
- Select one PDF. It doesn't split several documents at once.
- Size limit
- Up to 20 MB per file.
- Page limit
- You can choose up to 200 pages at once.
- Page range
- Write it like 1-3, 7. If you leave it empty, the whole document is the target.
- Split method
- Choose from Combine into one file, Split by each range and Split one page per file.
- Original
- Doesn't change the original file; it copies the chosen pages to make a new PDF.
- Where it runs
- Splitting runs inside this browser. Your document isn't sent to a server.
How to use Split PDF
Add your PDF and check the total page count
When you select the file, the total number of pages is shown. Setting the range with this number in view reduces errors from entering pages that don't exist. A password-protected document won't open, so remove the password first.
Write the pages to split as a range
Pick and write only the parts you need. If you leave it empty, the whole document is the target. An invalid range is flagged before you run it, so you don't save a mismatched result. Writing the same page more than once includes it only once.
Choose a split method and check the plan
When you choose a method, it previews as a list which files will be made and how many. Check the file names and page counts before running so you don't get an unexpected result.
Check the results and save
The files that were made appear in the list. Get only the ones you need individually, or all at once as a ZIP. If you change a setting, earlier results are cleared, so you need to run again with the new settings.
What it’s good for
Pull out just part of a document for submission
Sometimes you only need to send the signature page or the summary of a contract or report. Enter a page range and choose Combine into one file, and you get a single PDF with the chosen pages joined in order. It previews which files will be made before you run it, so you can spot a wrongly chosen range in advance.
Split by chapter for storage
Splitting a collection of material by chapter makes it easier to find later. Choose Split by each range and write ranges separated by commas, like 1-10, 11-25, and you get as many files as there are ranges. Split one page per file is for when you need a separate file for each page.

| Method | Choose it when | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Combine into one file | You want to gather only the needed pages and send them as one | One file is made. |
| Split by each range | You want to split by chapter or topic for storage | As many files as ranges separated by commas. |
| Split one page per file | You need to submit each page separately | As many files as the chosen pages. |
When the result isn’t what you expected
It says the PDF is password-protected
A document with an open password or editing restrictions can't be split. Save a copy with the password removed from the program that made the original, then select it again.
I get an error in the page range
Either a number goes past the document's real page count, or a larger number was written first. Check the total page count shown next to the file and write the smaller number first. Use only commas and hyphens.
The file names look similar
Names are set automatically from the chosen page numbers. If the same name collides, a number is added to the end so files don't overwrite each other. You can change the name in the download window when you save.
Key terms
- Page range

- ZIP
- A format for getting several result files as one bundle.
Split PDF FAQ
Does my original file change?
No. It only copies the chosen pages to make a new PDF, and the file you uploaded stays as it is.
How many pages can I split at once?
You can choose up to 200 pages at once. If you need more, split the range and run it twice. Files up to 20 MB are supported.
How are the file names decided?
They're set automatically by adding the chosen page numbers. If names collide, a number is added at the end so files don't overwrite each other.
Can I merge them back together after splitting?
Use the Merge PDF tool. You can set the order and combine them into one again.
Are bookmarks and signatures kept?
Bookmarks, digital signatures and form fields can differ from the original after splitting. For documents where those matter, open the result and check it before using it.
Can I see the result before running?
When you set the method and range, it first shows as a list which files will be made and how many.
